It was 1961 when brothers Tom Monaghan and James Monaghan purchased an existing restaurant. It was a tiny pizza restaurant chain with the name of Dominick’s that is owned by Dominick DiVarti, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. A sum of $900 was paid for the restaurant. James does not want to leave his job, but the business venture took a huge quantity of work. Therefore, James sold his shares to Tom to purchase Tom’s Volkswagen Beetle they used for pizza delivery. I personally feel bad for him. Had he were in business, he would have gotten much higher than that.

According to Domino’s site in 1965 Tom Monaghan renamed his company as “Domino’s Pizza, Inc.” The name was suggested by an employee who was named Jim Kennedy. In the early days, Tom owned three locations and his logo was also three dots that represented the stores. Tom wanted to include dots to each store, however Domino’s experienced such an enormous expansion that it was feasible and the idea was put aside. Initial franchises for Domino’s Pizza were granted in 1967. By the end of 1978 it had more than 200 stores.

It began its first international store in 1983. In the year 1983, Domino’s was so well-known throughout the States it decided to make an the international market and opened its first store opening in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In the same year , they opened the first store located in Queensland, Australia Domino’s started its international campaign, which turned out to be an excellent run. Since then, it has seen expansion all over the world. In 1985, the company opened outlets located in Luton, U.K and Tokyo, Japan. There were stores popping up across different nations and by the year 1995 they had over 1000 stores in different regions of the globe.

The growth was so fast that they had their 1500th store in 1997. The number grew to 6000 worldwide locations by 2014.

Domino’s launched its 1,000th location within India in February, 2016. The expansion of the store’s menu , it also saw modifications and expansion. The company’s revenues increased in 1999 by 4.4 percent, with sales worldwide in excess of $3.36 billion. In 2000, domino’s celebrated their 40th anniversary , and at the time, they had 2000 stores outside of the U.S and continued to grow as did the income.

In 2001, Domino’s outlets located in New York City and Washington, D.C. They served nearly 12,000 pizzas for the relief workers after the September 11 attacks. Domino’s created a match-funds for team members program to help financially those in need. American Red Cross and donates $350,000 to the Disaster Relief Effort. Domino’s has continued to expand, opening new stores, adding new menu items and making donations to different causes. In 2007, Domino’s launched making orders online and via mobile.

It became the biggest sandwich delivery service overnight after it introduced its line of baked sandwiches that were baked in 2008. In the same year, domino’s tracker was introduced that allows customers to keep track of the progress of their pizzas from baking until delivery.

Today, domino’s boasts more than 16,000 stores across the world, and this number is growing each year.
